Welcome to my Gateway Portfolio! This collection of projects was created during the 2017 Winter Semester as a part of the Sweetland Center Minor in Writing Program's Gateway Course. I hope you find my pieces to be at least moderately interesting, mildly emotive, or somewhat informative.

A quick fact sheet about myself just so we can get acquainted:

  • I was born on May 14, 1997, in Mountain View, CA. I was raised in Sunnyvale, CA until I moved away for college at the University of Michigan.

  • I am currently a Rising Junior majoring in athletic training and minoring in writing.

  • I love to play volleyball. I am a setter when playing indoor, but love to play beach because on the sand a player must be an all-around player.

  • My favorite sports teams to watch are any of the Michigan varsity teams, the Golden State Warriors, the San Jose Sharks, the San Francisco Giants, and the San Francisco 49ers.

  • My dream school was Stanford University. Both my parents and three out of four of my grandparents graduated from there. The first word I knew how to write was Stanford. I applied Early Action and was deferred before being rejected. That said, I am so grateful that I am here at the University of Michigan. I truly believe that Michigan is the perfect school for me (minus the cold - I am still a California boy at heart).

  • I am a Stamps Leadership Scholar at the University of Michigan.

  • I am a serious introvert. I prefer to think things through before sharing my ideas. I love to have one-on-one conversations, but I sometimes find it difficult to interact in groups.

  • A very important figure in my life is a guy by the name of Lance von Stade. I hate to use clichés, but the statement "He changed my life" is an accurate one. An important exercise that he had me do that has been integral in my development as a human being was creating my own purpose paper. The purpose that I discovered to be meaningful to me is as follows: "Create a safe community in which every individual feels valued."

  • As such, empathy and compassion are incredibly important to me and I try to use both in my life as much as possible.

If you connect with any of the above points or even simply want to know more about me or what drives me, you can contact me through email at bockholt@umich.edu

You will find that the projects featured on this site relate to the last point in some capacity. The "Why I Write" paper is closely, but not explicitly, tied with both empathy and compassion as the process of connecting with others is integral to being able to empathize and be compassionate. Both the Repurposing Paper and the Remediation Project are clearly linked to empathy as I discuss the idea of "Empathetic America" versus "Trump's America."

Thank you for taking the time to explore my portfolio. Free to peruse the portfolio in any order, though keep in mind the Repurposing and Remediation are closely related. Enjoy!
